GE14 | Caretaker deputy home minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed has denied stopping Malaysians from voting in the 14th general election, insisting that he always encourages citizens to fulfil their civic duties.

“Who is stopping Malaysians from voting? I did not, I was merely saying this is a trick by the opposition, who cannot rely on local voters to ensure success for their candidates.

“This is what I mean by not stopping (anyone from voting.)

"Instead I am encouraging everyone to go back to vote, but I only wish to highlight that the opposition is cheating the people, that’s all,” he was quoted as saying by Utusan Online after attending a walkabout programme in Johor Bahru.

On Friday, Nur Jazlan reportedly said it was “wrong” for the opposition to encourage outstation voters to come back to vote.

"The principle of using outstation voters to influence the result of the constituency is wrong, because at the end of the day they (the opposition candidates) do not hold their seat for every election.

“The candidates keep moving around. Even if they win, they don’t serve their constituencies and the next election they look for another place to avoid issues in their own constituencies,” he was quoted as saying by The Star.

His remark drew fire from the opposition, who claimed he was denying people’s efforts to vote.
