GE14 | Wanita Umno chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil has denied reports that she would be making an electoral comeback in the Bandar Tun Razak parliamentary seat for the upcoming 14th general elections.

"Many people had asked me whether I would accept the offer to contest in Bandar Tun Razak.

"My answer is NO, although Bandar Tun Razak is an area where Barisan Nasional can win and defeat PKR," she said through her official Twitter account @ShahrizatJalil this morning.

Shahrizat was expected to make her elections comeback in GE14 after sitting out of the 2013 general election.

She was defeated in her old seat, Lembah Pantai, in 2008 by PKR debutant Nurul Izzah Anwar.

Malaysiakini reported last week that multiple Umno sources had confirmed a candidate from the party would be contesting in the Bandar Tun Razak instead of MCA.

At the time, sources said that the party had intentions to field Shahrizat, rather than its Bandar Tun Razak Umno chief Rizalman Mokhtar, who was arrested in a joint MACC and police operation earlier this month, but subsequently cleared after initially testing positive for drugs.

Shahrizat had initially downplayed the news of her proposed candidacy , although it had triggered unhappiness among Umno grassroots in Bandar Tun Razak and Federal Territories Umno.

Bandar Tun Razak is traditionally an MCA seat, but Umno has been making a strong push to contest in the constituency, arguing that it would fare better with the local Malay community, who make up more than 50 percent of voters.

MCA lost Bandar Tun Razak to then-PKR candidate Abdul Khalid Ibrahim in 2008. Khalid won the seat again in 2013 with a solid 11,832 vote majority, but subsequently left the party to become an independent.
