BN defender may become a rebel

Mohd Puad Zarkashi, BN's staunchest defender, was dropped from the Johor election line-up.

Responding to speculation that Puad will stand as an independent against BN, Umno vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said this was not in the spirit of the party.

Puad said he was "staying strong" despite not being fielded.

BN's candidate Ismail Mohamed said he was prepared to take on his former mentor Muhyiddin Yassin in Pagoh.

Malacca BN unveiled its list of candidates, which included the prime minister's political secretary Wong Nai Chee in Alor Gajah and former Malacca chief minister Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam in Hang Tuah Jaya.

Incumbent Alor Gajah MP Koh Nai Kwong declined to accept his appointment letter for the state seat of Machap Jaya while another candidate Lee Chong Len fled the ceremony when it was announced that he would contest in the DAP stronghold of Bandar Hilir instead of Kesidang.

In Negeri Sembilan, former state menteri besar Mohd Isa Abdul Samad was dropped as a candidate.

In Kelantan, BN's incumbent assemblyperson Nozula Mat Diah expressed sadness that he was not informed earlier about being dropped as a candidate despite having served for 28 years.

Wan Azizah puts foot down on candidate list

PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail announced the election candidates for Selangor amid last-minute internal wrangling.

PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali, who is also Selangor PKR chief, had earlier met with PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim in hospital on the matter.

Earlier in the day, a teary incumbent Rawang MP Gan Pei Nei claimed a poison pen letter was written against her with the intention to get her dropped as a candidate.

Gan was not in the list when Wan Azizah announced the candidates.

Wan Azizah, during the announcement, urged party members to close ranks.

PKR also released a yet-to-be-finalised list of all its candidates nationwide, which included Wan Azizah for Pandan and PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar for Permatang Pauh.

Pakatan Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad warned that there may be attempts to buy the opposition coalition's candidates on nomination day.

Bersatu gets stay on deregistration

Bersatu secured a stay against the Registrar of Societies' provisional dissolution order pending a challenge against the decision in the High Court in Kuala Lumpur.

The High Court in Malacca granted leave to seven voters to mount a challenge against the Election Commission's redelineation exercise.

1MDB chief executive officer Arul Kanda Kandasamy admitted that he knew businessperson Low Taek Jho and other figures named by the US Department of Justice since before he joined 1MDB.

He also said he preferred to remain in the corporate sector for the time being but did not rule out politics in future.
