Shafie set to defend Semporna and face cousin in Senallang state seat
GE14 | Parti Warisan Sabah president Mohd Shafie Apdal is set to defend the parliamentary seat of Semporna in the upcoming general election.
This was announced by Shafie himself during the announcement of Warisan's electoral candidates in Kota Kinabalu today.
This time around, however, the five-term Semporna lawmaker will also be heading to contest the Senallang state seat.
Contesting a state seat is necessary for Shafie to be appointed as the chief minister should the Warisan-led opposition pact were to take over the state from BN.
However, this means that he will go head to head with his cousin Nasir Sakaran who is also the seat's incumbent.
Apart from this showdown, another of Shafie's cousin, Razak Sakaran has been fielded by BN for the Bugaya state seat. Both Senallang and Bugaya, are state seats under Semporna.
In the last general election, Shafie retained the Semporna parliamentary seat with a vote-majority of 20,905. He was then an Umno vice-president and a federal BN minister.
In the coming election, Shafie is set to face Ramlee Marahaban in Semporna. Ramlee is the incumbent Bugaya state assemblyperson.
Following Shafie's exit from Umno, Ramlee became his biggest critic, claiming that Shafie had not done much for Semporna, among others.
Warisan is set to contest in 17 parliamentary and 45 state seats.
