GE14 | Shahrir Abdul Samad said the Malay tsunami bandied by the opposition was intended to destroy the long-established Malay institutions in the country.

The Felda chairperson said the tsunami meant by the opposition was destruction on a long-term strategy not only targeted for the 14th general election but had begun since GE13.

He said the political tsunami planned by the opposition began after GE13 with an attack on Malay institutions, important bodies for the Malays such as Tabung Haji, Tabung Angkatan Tentera and Felda.

"The opposition attacked the Tabung Angkatan Tentera, an institution that is also close to the hearts of the Malays as many Malays served in the armed forces, (then), attacked Felda, made numerous allegations, saying Felda is bankrupt and so forth.

"They (the opposition) attack bodies which have Malay interests, meaning, the so-called tsunami is not just during the general election but had been planned in a manner to strike and destroy the confidence of the Malays in the existing government by first attacking Malay bodies or institutions,” he told reporters after a walkabout at Larkin Sentral in Johor Bahru, today.

Shahrir, who is also Johor Bahru Umno division chief, said this when commenting on the opposition’s strategy which at the outset allegedly wanted to put forward a prominent leader against him to seize the Johor Bahru parliamentary seat.

The opposition was reportedly confident that the Malay tsunami would happen in GE14.

Shahrir is defending his seat against PKR candidate Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, who is also PKR Johor Bahru division chief.

Nevertheless, the senior politician would not take the fight against his 32-year-old opponent lightly.

His fate, he said, rested with the Johor Bahru voters who could evaluate his performance during the five years as their representative.
