GE14 | Pakatan Harapan in Kedah is now awaiting the mandate from the coalition's senior leadership on the appointment of the new menteri besar for the state.

This comes after Harapan won 18 state seats in the just completed 14th general election, giving it the simple majority to form the new Kedah government.

According to Kedah Harapan chairperson Mukhriz Mahathir, they have already received a letter from the palace and are now awaiting a response from the Harapan leadership.

"Tomorrow, we will get an invitation (to the) swearing-in ceremony. However we have yet to receive the full mandate from the higher leadership (as we are) still waiting for the appointment letter," Mukhriz told reporters at an early morning press conference at the Harapan office in Alor Star.

Mukhriz said this when questioned on who would be menteri besar candidate when the newly-minted state government is formed.

He added that several names were being considered for the post.

Besides the 18 seats Harapan won, out of the 36 in the Kedah state assembly, PAS won 15 and BN, three.

Mukhriz said while it would appear that the seats are divided, the Harapan coalition deserved to form the new state government.

The new menteri besar is expected to take his oath of office at Istana Kedah tomorrow evening.
