PKR is studying prison laws to secure an early release of its de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim before June 8, said party president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
"We will look into the rules and regulations of the prison law, to find out who has the power to release Anwar," she told the media after meeting her husband at Cheras Rehabilitation Centre in Kuala Lumpur.
There is a provision under the Prison Act 1995, which allows an inmate to be released earlier than the actual release date, she said.
"We expect (Anwar to be released) in a week.
"The Prison Act (stipulates) if the director of a prison is satisfied and he enables (Anwar) to be released immediately, then it will be within the next two or three days. (Maybe) Monday, I don’t know," Wan Azizah added.
In the Harapan leaders' audience with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V, she said, the monarch also expressed a wish for Anwar's early release.
Wan Azizah believed it could be easier to invoke the prison law to obtain Anwar’s early release.
Anwar, who is currently serving a five-year jail sentence on sodomy conviction, is slated to be released on June 8.
Wan Azizah, who visited Anwar today in his ward, noted how joyful her husband was.
"I am very happy to note that when I met my husband he was in a jubilant mood. Even though he is not in the ring, he felt that he was part of the change of the 61-year-old government," she said.
"That jubilant mood (seems to) help his health," she said, adding Anwar followed closely the election results and the swearing-in of Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
