While Selangorians are waiting in anticipation of who the new Selangor menteri besar would be, it has been made known to the PKR leadership that it is better for a young person to run the show.

The new menteri besar is supposed to be installed on June 19, after the Aidilfitri celebrations, and so far it is still unknown who has been picked by PKR.

It is not easy task to pick the right person as it is truly difficult to fill the shoes of former Selangor menteri besar Azmin Ali, who has led the state to much progress since he assumed the post in 2014, said Dr Afif Bahardin.

"His replacement must be somebody of high calibre, energetic and a fast learner, like his predecessor," Afif, who is PKR Youth deputy chief, said in an interview with Malaysiakini in Penang.

Although this is Pakatan Harapan's third term in Selangor, where the coalition led by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, won with a supermajority of 51 out of the 56 state seats, it would be much more challenging to govern the state now, Afif noted.

"The rakyat would have higher expectations for the state government to perform in the best manner, so that the rakyat can benefit the most from the new government," said the Penang executive councillor in charge of health, agriculture and rural development.

Azmin has resigned his post of menteri besar to assume the post of minister of economic affairs in Mahathir's cabinet, which was sworn-in by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on May 21.

Afif said despite the challenges, PKR has many capable younger leaders who can take up the post.

Amiruddin Shari seen as the front-runner

"We do have many candidates of calibre for the post of Selangor menteri besar post.

"The ones who are on PKR's list are some of the best," said Afif, PKR's Seberang Jaya assemblyperson, who has entered his second term after retaining the seat in the May 9 election.

"However, if possible, we in the Youth wing prefer someone young," he added.

Afif declined to be more specific but he is more likely to throw his support behind 38-year old Sungai Tua assemblyperson Amiruddin Shari, who is also PKR's central committee member.

Said to be the front-runner for the post, Amiruddin is currently the state executive councillor in charge of youth development, sports, culture and entrepreneurship development.

Two other names on the list of potential for menteri besar are PKR vice-president and Seri Setia assemblyperson Shaharuddin Baharuddin and Ijok assemblyperson Dr Idris Ahmad.

Although Azmin met with Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah yesterday, he did not submit any name for his possible successor to the state ruler.
