Umno has urged the Pakatan Harapan government to break its silence on the attempts to belittle and insult the institution of Malay rulers.

The party's strategic communication unit expressed concern over the culture of insolence towards the rulers taking root among certain individuals and quarters who are doing this on the pretext of freedom of expression.

“This culture is deliberately being sown with the intention of eroding the people's loyalty towards the Malay rulers.

“Therefore, Umno wants preventive measures to be taken against any provocative action which rejects the principle of loyalty to the rulers as contained in the Rukun Negara,” it added.

The unit said Umno stands together with the Malay rulers in defending the rights involving Islam as the religion of the federation enshrined in Article 3(1), the position of the rulers as in Article 38, the position of Bahasa Malaysia as the national language in Article 152 and the special rights of the Malays in Article 153 of the Federal Constitution.

On another matter, the unit said Umno accepted the decision of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V to consent to the appointment of Tommy Thomas as the new attorney-general.

“Although numerous quarters opposed his appointment, Umno takes the stand to leave the matter to the consideration and wisdom of His Majesty and Conference of Rulers.

“In this spirit, Umno vows to adhere to this ruling and would continue to stand strong under the colours of His Majesty and Conference of Rulers.

“Umno would ensure there are no disputes over this appointment and would continue to safeguard the sovereignty of the institution of Malay rulers,” it added.
