Gerakan: Siti Kasim's arrest strengthens need for IPCMC

Gerakan Youth deputy chief Andy Yong said the police's move to arrest lawyer Siti Kasim based on a police report involving her 24-year-old client Anis Izzatty Ruslan further strengthens the need for an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC).

The police report was lodged by Anis' mother. Anis had denied the contents of the report, claiming that she had to deal with an overly-controlling mother and had sought refuge at Siti Kasim's home.

Yong said it was not appropriate to simply arrest someone based on a police report without certainty that the claim was true or false.

"It is not something new that the police force arrest someone merely based on a report lodged. This is so when the complainant knows or has a connection with the investigation officer.

"Therefore it is necessary in order for the police force to weed out rogue officers and enhance its ability to discharge its duties to the public.

"It is high time to have an independent body to monitor any possible abuse of power or misconduct of the law enforcement officer. Police must be held accountable for their action," he said in a statement today.

Therefore, Yong said the government should set up an IPCMC.

"The rakyat should not be afraid of any rogue police personnel especially when they did nothing wrong.

"Police personnel must be reminded that they are civil servants. Therefore there is a need to serve the people with integrity in order to gain more respect," he said.

The magistrate today denied police's application to remand Siti Kasim.

She was subsequently released and accompanied Kajang district police chief Ahmad Dzaffir Mohd Yussof.

The duo held a joint press conference to explain the situation.
