Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s statement that Sarawak governor Abdul Taib Mahmud has not been probed over alleged corruption because no one has lodged a report against the latter, has put Sarawak DAP in a difficult position.

This is because DAP has consistently campaigned against Taib and the former Sarawak BN.

For Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen, they will not spare the regrouped Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) in the state elections as long as the latter is not in Pakatan Harapan.

“In the next three years, how Sarawakians will vote will depend on how the Harapan federal government performs.

“As it is now, GPS is not in Harapan, GPS is only BN 2.0.

“So, I think we should be more concerned and be more focused on implementing our promises.

“Since GPS is not in Harapan, we will definitely fight against them (in the state election),” he told reporters after attending a central executive committee (CEC) meeting at DAP’s headquarters in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Asked whether he is worried Sarawak DAP may not have the power it had before, Chong said if Harapan does a good job, it will inspire Sarawakians’ confidence and support for Harapan in the coming state election, due in 2021.

“As such, GPS as BN 2.0, who wants to defend their power, will be facing a difficult time.”

Cabinet post 'not big deal'

Regarding his appointment as a deputy minister despite having been promised a ministership, Chong said personal gain or loss is not a big deal for him.

It is learned that the CEC will be making a resolution on the party’s stance on Chong and Perak DAP chief Nga Kor Ming not getting full ministerial posts as promised by secretary-general Lim Guan Eng before the 14th general election.

Lim has refused to comment on such a resolution when met.
