Women, Family and Community Development Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has said that the government will tighten laws relating to childcare and childcare centres following yet another infant’s death.

This measure, she said, was necessary to plug up loopholes in existing laws and to prevent such tragedies from recurring.

Wan Azizah was responding to the death of 10-month-old Naufal Amsyar Nabil Fikri this morning, after reportedly falling four days ago at a babysitter's house in Johor.

"I feel so sad when such tragedies happen. It is truly a tragedy.

"I am of the opinion that in order for us to avoid such cases from recurring, we must tighten existing laws, acts and rules," she said.

Wan Azizah, the deputy prime minister, stated that she has had numerous discussions with the Attorney-General's Chambers and obtained their feedback on the issue.

"I have discussed this matter numerous times with, among others, the Attorney-General's Chambers and they have given me what (laws) must be tightened, as currently, our laws have loopholes that must be filled and observed," she said.

Wan Azizah, who is also Pandan MP, had been speaking to the press at an open house event for her constituency in Kuala Lumpur today.

Upon being asked when the matter would be brought to Parliament, she responded that it must first be taken to the attorney-general.

In the case of Naufal Amsyar, his 35-year-old babysitter in Tangkak had been arrested under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.

The incident came after the death of another infant, five-month-old Adam Raykal Mohd Sufi Naeif, who had also been left in the care of a sitter early this month.

His sitter had initially reported him missing, but a police check found the child’s body hidden in the freezer compartment of the sitter's home. A post-mortem subsequently found that Adam Rayqal had a fractured skull and had died of a brain haemorrhage.

This babysitter has since been charged with child abuse and with concealing the body.
