Outgoing PKR Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has announced that he will be contesting for a spot in the party's leadership council (MPP) in the forthcoming PKR elections.

In a Twitter post, he also voiced support for Anwar Ibrahim as president and Rafizi Ramli as PKR deputy president.

The Setiawangsa MP said PKR needs to implement its reform agenda to bring Malaysia forward, and must not give up on its struggle to combat corruption, abuse of power and divide-and-conquer politics.

"I believe Anwar and Rafizi are the best people to lead us in this struggle," Nik Nazmi said.

Rafizi announced his decision to contest the deputy presidency last night. This sets the stage for a possible showdown with his archrival in the party and incumbent deputy president Azmin Ali.

Nik Nazmi, 36, has surpassed the age limit to defend his Youth chief post.

In the 2014 party elections, he won the Youth chief post by a slim 250-vote majority against Azmin protege and current Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari.

That was the same year the rivalry between Azmin and Rafizi intensified and began dominating the PKR internal politics.

The rivalry is expected to form the battlefield for most of the elections to the party's national positions this year.
