Ibrahim Ali, the founder and former leader of Malay rights pressure group Perkasa, has formed a new political party known as Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra).

During the launch of the new party in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur today, Ibrahim said his party will adopt the tengkolok as its logo.

Ibrahim said he had decided to establish a new Malay party because he has been urged to do by those who were dissatisfied with the current state of the nation's affairs.

He said he and co-founder Mohd Khalid Yunus had been approached by academics, NGOs, political leaders and youths who have all expressed disenchantment with how the country is being run.

"After soliciting feedback and meeting various groups, we have arrived at the decision to form a new party to help the bumiputera community which is currently in disarray," he said.

Ibrahim said the necessary paperwork was submitted to the Registrar of Societies on Aug 13 and pro tem committee was now waiting for feedback from the authorities. 

Mohd Khalid was formerly an Umno supreme council member and deputy information minister between 1999 to 2003.

Ibrahim had formed Perkasa in June 2008 in response to BN's electoral setbacks during the 12th general election three months prior.

At the time, the coalition lost its two-thirds majority for the first time since 1969, mostly at the expense of coalition parties representing non-Malays.

Ibrahim quit Perkasa on May 15, in response to the 14th general elections results which saw BN losing power at the federal level for the first time in history.

At the time, Ibrahim said he decided to quit the organisation he had led for a decade because Malays did not appreciate "Agama, bangsa dan tanah air" ("Abata" or religion, race and motherland).
