100 days later; big AES write-off; Jho Low has kids?

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

100 days later

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, in a televised address, said his administration had addressed 21 out of 60 election pledges and that there was much more to do.

The previous administration had left the government RM1 trillion in debt and just repaying the interest alone can bankrupt the country, said Mahathir.

Mahathir accused BN of trying to make matters worse for the Harapan government by harping on race, religion and monarchy in an attempt to incite hatred.

He also complained that some of his new colleagues in government are behaving as though they were still part of the opposition.

Harapan manifesto committee member Rais Husin lamented that some cabinet ministers and their deputies did not read the coalition's manifesto properly.

Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin urged his BN and Umno colleagues to stop harping on Harapan's unfulfilled election pledges and find fresh ideas to hold the new government to account.

Gerakan legal bureau head Baljit Singh opined that the public should assess Harapan after five years, because 100 days was just too short.

Big AES write-off

Putrajaya has decided to write-off RM435 million in fines that were issued under the Automatic Enforcement System (AES) to date, but will strictly enforce the system from Sept 1 onwards.

Bank Negara governor Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus revealed that the central bank once slapped a RM15 million fine on 1MDB.

The man who rammed his vehicle into a double-parked car owned by an aide to former Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai was fined RM2,000.

Jho Low has kids?

According to the Wall Street Journal, Jho Low fled Macau after the May 9 elections with his wife and two children. The report claimed they are currently seeking refuge in China.

Low didn't deny the allegations but instead accused WSJ's writers of being unethical because they were about to release a book and were writing news pieces to suit their agenda and that of Mahathir's.

Low nor his agents appear to have challenged the Malaysian government's ongoing attempts to legally claim ownership of the Equanimity.
