The Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) through the 3rd Border Regiment seized a range of essential items valued at RM200,000 believed to be smuggled into the state via the Kelantan-Thailand border.

Eighth Infantry Brigade commander brig-gen Muhammad Huzaimi Sabri said the goods were seized in a series of raids carried out under Ops Merpati and Ops Wawasan in the area, from last month until now.

“Among the items seized are rice, cooking oil, petrol, frozen chicken and also ketum,” he told reporters at Pos Tok O, Rantau Panjang in Pasir Mas today.

Huzaimi said there was no arrest made as the smugglers fled the area as soon as they realised the presence of military personnel.

He said during the raids, the team also detained three Myanmar nationals who tried to enter the country illegally by crossing Sungai Golok.

“The smuggling activities along the border has increased slightly, especially during the festive season as smuggled goods get high demand from consumers,” he said, adding that the troops were patrolling the border around the clock to combat the smuggling attempts.

He said they also worked closely with the local community to enable them to channel information on smuggling activities to the authorities.
