PAS will give way to Umno to contest the Port Dickson parliamentary by-election, said PAS Ulama chief Mahfodz Mohamed.

He said the Islamist party had had a discussion about the by-election on Wednesday, where they came to a decision to support Umno in contesting the seat against PKR president-elect Anwar Ibrahim.

"Yesterday we had a discussion about the by-election in Port Dickson, and we will make way for Umno to contest there.

"We would prefer to see a straight contest, and we will support Umno as Umno had supported PAS in the Seri Setia by-election," he told reporters after the launching ceremony of the PAS Ulama wing muktamar (annual general assembly) in Kuala Terengganu today.

Mahfodz's deputy Nik Muhammad Zawawi Nik Salleh added that opposition parties, including those in Sabah and Sarawak, have reached an understanding whereby only one of them would contest against Pakatan Harapan in future by-elections.

"We have reached to this stage where, in the event of a by-election in any location, only one party from the opposition bloc would contest," he said.

Nik Muhammad added that while this pact has yet to be legally binding, it had been agreed upon by all opposition parties.

The decision by PAS to make way for Umno came shortly after PKR announced that its incumbent MP had vacated the Port Dickson seat to make way for Anwar.

The MP, Danyal Balagopal Abdullah, announced his intention at a press conference in Petaling Jaya yesterday.
