PAS and Umno must find compatibility and understanding in order to work together, after both have found themselves in the opposition corner following the recent general election, according to Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

He said his presence, along with an Umno Youth delegation, at PAS Youth's 59th muktamar (annual general assembly) in Kuala Terengganu, was historic for both parties and a step towards finding common ground.

"We are now both in the opposition, so we must have compatibility and understanding, and we begin by attending each other's programmes.

"Our (Umno Youth) presence at the PAS muktamar is upon the invitation of the central PAS Youth leadership.

"This, for me, is historic as after 40 years apart, this is the first time Umno is attending PAS muktamar," he said to reporters at a press conference at the assembly last night.

With him were PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and PAS Youth chief Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi.

Asyraf added that it is most important for both parties to stand strong together, in the interest of Islam and the people.

"Whatever form of cooperation (both parties adopt), it must be in the interest of Islam and the people as a whole.

"This is something I feel we must carry out as both our parties' foundations are the same - to represent the Malays and Muslims, which are the biggest group in the country.

"This is to truly strengthen the opposition bloc," he said.

He then proceeded to invite PAS Youth wing to the Umno general assembly taking place at the end of this month.

PAS and Umno began working together during the recent Selangor state by-elections with PAS first giving way to Umno to contest in the Sungai Kandis polls last month so as not to split the votes against Pakatan Harapan. This was reciprocated by Umno in Seri Setia earlier this month.

PAS also helped BN component party MCA campaign in Balakong. However, Harapan ended up retaining all three seats with PKR winning in Sungai Kandis and Seri Setia while DAP secured Balakong.

Even so, voter turnout for all three by-elections was abysmal, the lowest in recent times, with none exceeding 50 percent. This was attributed to election fatigue from the May 9 general election.
