Jeli MP Mustapa Mohamed was investigated by the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), more than a week before he announced he is quitting Umno, said its secretary-general Annuar Musa.

According to Annuar, two other Kelantan Umno leaders were also probed. 

"I can confirm that Kelantan Umno, including Tok Pa (Mustapa), were investigated by the police 10 days ago. He received a substantial amount and it was investigated by the police," he told a press conference in Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) today. 

Annuar, however, did not elaborate on the source and amount of funds allegedly received by Mustapa. 

Earlier today, Umno supreme council member Lokman Noor Adam also claimed that Mustapa decided to quit Umno after he was "threatened" by Daim Zainuddin, for allegedly receiving funds from former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak. 

Lokman claimed that Mustapa was questioned by the MACC for three days, regarding the funds, and was allegedly given an ultimatum by Daim to quit Umno or be charged in court. 

However, Annuar said that Mustapa's decision to quit may not be, after all, tied to the police investigations. 

"I cannot say that's the reason he quit. Not necessarily. I don't dare (say so), you have to ask him."

'Khairy merely speculated'

Meanwhile, Annuar also dismissed a remark by Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin that Mustapa's (photo) resignation stemmed from his unhappiness over Umno working with PAS. 

"KJ (Khairy) had tweeted that Tok Pa quit (Umno) because of Umno's cooperation with PAS, but when I checked with KJ, he hadn't even spoken to Tok Pa (then). That means KJ merely speculated. 

"I have my own version too. I know Tok Pa quit not because Umno worked with PAS, because he has never rejected (such cooperation). That's not the issue. He would not have quit the party just because of that.

"I can stress that KJ's statement is way off the mark, and its merely his own interpretation," said Annuar. 

Mustapa, who is Jeli MP, announced on Tuesday that he is quitting Umno, after 40 years in the party.

Less than 24 hours after his resignation, Kimanis MP and former foreign minister, Anifah Aman, followed suit.
