PAS would be open to forming a unity government with Umno and Pakatan Harapan parties, deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said today.

"Yes, (we will) see how things turn out," he told reporters after attending the opening of Umno's annual general assembly in Kuala Lumpur last night.

This comes after Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was reported as saying that he is open to forming a pact with a Harapan party.

"I see that he (Zahid’s) focus is on two main issues, which is the recovery of Umno, and the consensus politics of the opposition bloc.

"(PAS) is always open, as the concept is almost the same with (what we had) in PAS. We are always open when it comes to what is good for the country and the future," he said.

However, he said PAS has yet to hear anything about plans for a unity government from Harapan.

The Kubang Kerian lawmaker said PAS is currently focusing on consensus politics, a long way off from discussions about a unity government.

"At this stage, we are focusing on common interests. We (PAS and Umno) were helping each other during the by-elections in the context of political consensus in the opposition bloc," he said, referring to the Sungai Kandis and Seri Setia by-elections.

Tuan Ibrahim added that it was PAS that had first suggested the formation of a unity government that includes the opposition bloc in the administration, he said.

The idea of a unity government was hotly debated in the ongoing Umno assembly, with some grassroots members and leaders eager to see Umno return to power, even without going through the general election process.

Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin and Umno Youth delegates appeared uneasy with Zahid's plans, following the lead of Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki's objection to "backdoor attempts" to return to power.

PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim has denied his party is in talks with Umno on such a plan.
