Former premier Najib Abdul Razak has launched a broadside against his successor Dr Mahathir Mohamad for his latest remarks on Pakatan Harapan's election promise to abolish tolls if it comes to power.

He also accused the medical doctor-turned-politician of being a “spin doctor” instead.

“Before becoming the government, (the then opposition) promised to abolish tolls. Who was that who said, the government only needs a few ringgit to do so?

“Spins everyday, when it was him (Mahathir) who granted lopsided (toll) concessions (during his first tenure as prime minister).

“But it is the BN government and I, Najib Razak, who are blamed despite my announcement almost every year that tolls are abolished in several areas,” he added in a Facebook posting this evening.

Najib noted how Harapan leaders had “screamed” (about abolishing tolls) from “Puchong to Simpang Renggam” and made posters as well as videos, which were watched by millions.

Hari ini, apa cerita? (What's the outcome today?)

“This is what happens when dishonest promises are made to the people merely out of greed for power,” he added.

Earlier, it was reported that Mahathir said it would not be feasible to abolish tolls on highways unless the price of petrol is raised.

The premier also claimed that he was against the pledge which was one of 60 in Harapan's election manifesto for the 14th general election.

“We made the manifesto thinking we would not be the government. Now we are the government and this manifesto is a big burden,” he had said.
