Hishammuddin Hussein has offered to track down fugitive financier Jho Low in China as he wants to see closure to the 1MDB case.

The former defence minister stressed that he is offering himself for the task in his personal capacity, and not on Putrajaya's request.

"I personally want to see the 1MDB issue settled, and justice done.

"If Jho Low is in China, I will personally go there to bring him back to face justice, because as long as he is overseas, the 1MDB issue will not be resolved.

"...If there are rumours of me going to China, it is not upon Putrajaya's request. I have had prior relationships with the Chinese government – if it is true Low is in China, I will make sure he is returned and produced in court," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.

Hishammuddin was responding to a question on whether he had been tasked by Putrajaya to mend ties with Beijing.

On July 5, it was confirmed that Low had fled to Macau. He left the gambling haven six days later, however, for an unspecified location. 

Hishammuddin, the Sembrong MP, stressed that he would go "all out" to bring Low back to face the music. 

"There are rumours that he (Low) is in China, and to establish if he is really there, I have to speak to several of China's leaders, and if they refuse to hand Low over to Malaysia, I want to know why. 

"If I can help, I will go to the end of the world to find him," he said. 

Just over a year ago, Hishammuddin, then the Umno vice-president, had challenged the US Department of Justice (DOJ) to press charges if they had proof of wrongdoing in the 1MDB affair.

If the DOJ failed to do so, he said at the time, its credibility would be called into question.
