PKR POLLS | Former Rawang state assemblyperson Gan Pei Nei has vowed to demand a fresh election for the Selayang PKR division citing the presence of illegitimate voters.

Gan, who failed to unseat William Leong as Selayang PKR chief after polls closed yesterday, said her team is collecting evidence to support her appeal.

According to the vote tally sheet for Selayang, 3,063 digital ballot slips or QR codes were issued.

This figure includes 517 votes which were recorded as "undi ragu ," which denotes votes cast by individuals whose eligibility to vote cannot be verified.

These undi ragu will only be added to the final tally once eligibility checks are conducted.

Gan said her team of scrutineers found that most of those who attempted to vote, despite not being listed in the Selayang PKR division membership records, were party members whose names were found in the records for the divisions in Sabah.

At the close of polls yesterday, several video clips were uploaded online depicting Gan's supporters questioning the eligibility of some of those intending to vote.

A number of such videos showed the would-be voters wearing button badges bearing Leong's photograph or name.

Some carried a sheet of paper meant as a guide to vote, which in local political parlance is referred to as a "cai".

Gan (photo) said although her team managed to turn away some of these individuals, others still managed to vote because there were simply too many of them.

She disclosed that her team believed that four or five buses were involved in ferrying these mysterious individuals.

"I alone found about 25 people who were brought here, in a systematic manner, to vote," she added.

Leong: Probe will clear me of any wrongdoing

Meanwhile, PKR Wanita vice-chief candidate Chua Yee Ling (third from right in photo), who monitored the election process in Selayang, believed that the problem was exacerbated by booths set up outside the polling centre.

These booths were meant for party members to check their eligibility and renew their membership by paying the RM2 annual fee.

Chua said she and her colleagues turned away about 100 suspicious individuals while they were queuing up to obtain the QR code.

"Some left after we questioned them. Some of them came back later and slipped passed us, successfully casting their votes as an 'undi ragu' voter," she added.

Contacted later, Leong said Gan had the right to lodge a police report as well as to file a complaint with the party.

"There will be a full investigation and there is no problem for me. I am confident that an investigation will clear me of any wrongdoing," he added.

Leong (photo) said his team had operated the booths outside the polling centre due to instructions from the party.

"We had commotions (previously) because some who claimed to be members were not allowed to vote. So, the party's election committee and political bureau agreed to allow them to cast their ballots as 'dubious voters'.

"Their votes were not counted yesterday, but the election committee will go through (the undi ragu) later," he added.

On the distribution of the cai, Leong said that this was normal in party elections and his rivals were doing the same.

Based on the preliminary tally yesterday, Leong retained the seat by pulling 335 votes ahead of Gan, who obtained 849 votes. A third contender, Asri Buang, secured 270 votes.
