More problems in PKR elections; Hisham offers to help bring Jho Low back

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

More problems in PKR elections

The ongoing PKR leadership elections continue to be beset with problems. Among others, Malaysiakini highlighted irregularities in the Julau PKR membership roll that could have a significant impact on the outcome of the polls.

Selayang division PKR chief candidate Gan Pei Nei claimed that people of doubtful eligibility had voted in Selayang, where she was defeated by her rival William Leong.

The Jelebu PKR division has lodged a police report calling for a recount of 315 votes that had been excluded due to internet problems on polling day.

In a statement, PKR president-elect Anwar Ibrahim called for disciplinary action against wrongdoers in the party election.

Bringing back Jho Low

Sources told Malaysiakini that Malaysia had recalled its former envoy to Singapore in 2016 for refusing to intervene in the financier Low Taek Jho’s sister’s detention by the republic’s police, but Najib denied knowledge of the incident.

Meanwhile, a report claims that Malaysia’s move to free 11 ethnic Uighur Muslims could have further chilled the country’s relations with Beijing, and thereby dimming its chances of bringing Low back to Malaysia to face justice.

Former defence minister Hishammuddin Hussein has offered to help track down Low in China in his personal capacity, saying that he wants to help bring the 1MDB scandal to a close.

ECRL: RM10b in or RM19b out?

Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng claimed that Malaysia stands to recoup RM10.02 billion if the government scraps the East Coast Rail Line (ECRL) project.

However, his predecessor Najib Abdul Razak warned that this may not be the case, that a cancellation would cause the project’s financier to recall the RM19.68 billion it had disbursed for the project.

Other Kinibites

MCA presidential hopeful Gan Ping Sieu has challenged the government to prove that the money MCA received prior to the 13th general election is “ill-gotten”, and says that the party would return the money if that turns out to be the case.

The search operation for the victims of the Jalan Bukit Kukus landslide has resulted in the recovery of nine bodies so far, with one person still unaccounted for.

A coalition of Selayang NGOs and residents’ associations urged the government to relocate a chicken slaughterhouse project, saying that it could cause problems for nearby residents, schools and places of worship.

Looking ahead

Former Treasury secretary-general Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah will be testifying to the Public Accounts Committee on the arrears in GST refund payments.

Domestic Trade and Consumers Affairs Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail will be making announcements on price controls ahead of the coming Deepavali celebration.

Former information minister and veteran journalist Zainuddin Maidin will be holding a discussion on his book "Di Depan Api Di Belakang Duri: Kisah Sejarah Utusan Melayu".
