Azmin regains lead in PKR polls; Umno party hoppers in focus

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Azmin regains lead in PKR polls

Azmin Ali retook the lead in the PKR deputy president contest after a landslide victory in the third round of voting in Selangor.

His rival Rafizi Ramli managed to win the position of Pandan division chief but the division chose to back Azmin in the deputy presidential race.

The PKR election in Selangor was plagued by technical issues which forced the Kuala Selangor division's election to be postponed.

Police later confirmed that a jammer was discovered at the site of the Kuala Selangor PKR election.

Umno party hoppers in focus

Umno information chief Shamsul Anuar Nasarah accused Bersatu of psy-war after its supreme council member A Kadir Jasin claimed at least 40 MPs may quit Umno.

DAP expressed concern about Pakatan Harapan component parties accepting former Umno MPs.

This was after former Umno veteran Mustapa Mohamed, who is the Jeli MP, joined Bersatu.

Amanah president Mohamad Sabu welcomed the recruitment, stating that the former BN minister can help Harapan expansion efforts in Kelantan.

Penang Bersatu chairperson Marzuki Yahya assured that his party will only accept defectors with no political baggage.

Guan Eng responds to PAS

Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said PAS made it out that he had sinned for speaking the truth about Kelantan's debt situation.

Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Steven Sim said the Kelantan government only repaid one percent of its debt obligations to the federal government in 2016.

Other Kinibites

MCA president Liow Tiong Lai said it was better for BN to dissolve instead of his party quitting the coalition.

MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong said Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi should show respect after the latter mooted rebranding BN and bringing PAS onboard.

DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang claimed that former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak's interview with Al Jazeera showed he acknowledged that funds had been misappropriated in 1MDB despite the "mindless" defence mounted by his supporters.

Syed Husin Ali, who heads the PKR disciplinary committee, said there had not been any formal complaints of money politics in the PKR polls.

Rafizi said money politics allegations against his allies would "backfire", alluding that it is those making the allegations that have such resources.

Looking ahead

The Dewan Rakyat will resume the debate on the 11th Malaysian Plan mid-term review.

The Federal Court will hear the Penang government's suit against the Election Commission on local elections.
