Daim: Jho Low made contact last week

Fugitive businessperson Jho Low had allegedly called up an officer to Council of Eminent Persons chairperson Daim Zainuddin last week to seek immunity in exchange for finding assets linked to the 1MDB scandal.

"He didn't call me, he called my officer... Sometimes the phone shows it's from another place, and last week there's another call, but I didn't answer," Daim said in an interview excerpt by Astro Awani last night.

Daim said Low wanted immunity from prosecution and had previously sought to influence Malaysia by seeking a meeting with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and others.

The former finance minister, however, said he had a test for Low, which the latter failed.

"I tested him. I said I wanted two things. Give me names, and since you say you have power, ask them to return to Malaysia.

"He kept quiet. I said 'if you can't deliver, why should I talk to you?'" Daim said.

It is not clear who were these individuals sought by Daim.

Low is believed to be the mastermind behind the 1MDB scandal.

The US Department of Justice claimed the Penang-born businessperson was central to the misappropriation of more than US$4 billion of 1MDB funds.

His whereabouts are currently unknown, but there is speculation that he might be in China.
