BUDGET 2019 | Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak has questioned the lack of any specific allocations or plans for farmers and fishermen in Budget 2019, saying Malaysia comprised more than just "urban folks".

"Budget 2019 speech text made no mention of farmers, agricultural workers, plantation workers or fishermen at all.

"Felda was only mentioned once and even then it was for the allocation of RM295 million for the improvements of roads, water supply and light installation," he said on Facebook earlier today.

He added that the allocation accorded for the agriculture sector - RM47 million for research and development on seeds, grains and fruits; RM18 million to incentivise the automation of the agrofood industry; and RM52 million for entrepreneur programmes and agro industry training - was far removed from that accorded by the BN government in Budget 2018.

"We accorded RM6.5 billion to farmers, plantation and agriculture workers, fishermen, small farmers, breeders and rubber tappers, including RM2.3 billion for aid and incentives such as fertiliser and production input.

"The Pakatan Harapan government must answer specifically what aid is being prepared for this group next year, including cost of living aid.

"Or have all the existing aid been removed?

"Malaysians don't just comprise urban folks," he said in his post.

The Budget 2019, the inaugural budget by the new Harapan government and the first from a new government since independence in 1957, was tabled in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.
