KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Dr M defends Waytha

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad defended former Hindraf chairperson P Waythamoorthy over calls for the latter's resignation, saying "we all have a past".

Mahathir also said the minister in the Prime Minister's Department should be "given a chance" following allegations that the latter only employs Indians as his aides.

Meanwhile, deputy inspector-general of police Noor Rashid Ibrahim said they will call up Waytha to assist in investigations into his 10-year-old video which has gone viral on social media.

On another matter, Mahathir said the Pakatan Harapan government must take into account public concerns over its election promise to repeal the National Security Council (NSC) Act 2016.

Faced with a shortage of funds, Pakatan Harapan will hold a fundraising dinner on Dec 9, with tables priced from RM2,000 onwards, said its president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Najib says Jho Low may have cheated his gov't

Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak claimed that his administration could have been cheated by fugitive businessperson Jho Low, who has been accused of masterminding the 1MDB scandal.

Former Goldman Sachs CEO Llyod Blankfein had a personal meeting with Low in December 2012, despite the bank's argument that its involvement in 1MDB was limited to a small number of rogue employees, the New York Times reported.

Speaking to Malay daily Sinar Harian in a live interview, Najib also stressed that he is not being a threat to anyone in Umno in his attempts to help his successor Ahmad Zahid Hamidi strengthen the party.

Najib also claimed in the interview that his chat with PKR president-elect Anwar Ibrahim on the night of the general election on May 9 was just on the basis of his regular communication with Anwar.

The president of an NGO called Persatuan Sahabat Ulul Amri claims that an unnamed "cruel" Umno leader forced Najib to quit as Umno president following his electoral loss and called for Najib to be reinstated to the position.
