I am no threat to anyone in Umno - Najib
Former Umno president Najib Abdul Razak has said that he is not a threat to anyone in his attempt to help his successor Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to strengthen the party.
"Right now, I am helping the party president and my colleagues to strengthen Umno. That's my role, I hope nobody will worry about what I am doing, I am not a threat to anyone.
"I am just offering myself as Umno leader based on my experience to empower Umno," he said in a live interview with Malay daily Sinar Harian today.
"I, however cannot do it all by myself. I need to lay hope on my colleagues to do it collectively," said the former prime minister.
Najib had stepped down as Umno president and BN chairperson after the coalition’s defeat in the 14th general election.
There have been calls by some Umno leaders for Najib to keep out of party affairs as he had became liability to the biggest opposition party.
There is hope for Umno to return to its former glory if the party has a clear direction and dare to fight as opposition party while its members stay united, according to him.
"One of our weaknesses is we restricted the talents in Umno. We have to be open our door and accept them (talents). Then, we can rebuild our ship," he said.
Meanwhile, Najib said Pakatan Harapan lacked moral integrity for not admitting before the May 9 poll that it could not actually fulfil its manifesto.
Harapan would not have won the general election without some of these election promises, he said.
“If Pakatan Harapan had stated in its manifesto that toll would remain, fuel price would be floated, and one had to repay PTPTN loan, would it have won?" he asked.
“If it was like that, I don't think Harapan would have garnered the support it did during the 14th general election,” he said.
