Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin today announced that her ministry has appointed a lawyer to assist the family of the late firefighter Muhammad Adib Bin Mohd Kassim.

She said the lawyer will act as a legal observer and also facilitate police investigation into the death of Adib, who succumbed to his injuries after being attacked during the riots at the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman temple on Nov 27.

"The Housing and Local Government Ministry has appointed Syazlin Mansor, who will act as a legal observer for Muhammad Adib and the Fire and Rescue Department.

Syazlin Mansor is a senior partner at the legal firm of Tina Ong & Syazlin Mansor.

"Apart from providing legal advice to Muhammad Adib's family and the Fire and Rescue Department, the lawyer will also assist police and prosecutors with regard to the current proceedings," she said in a statement today.

The Fire and Rescue Department falls under the purview of the Housing and Local Government Ministry.

In the early hours of Nov 26, a group of thugs allegedly hired by the developer that owns the land on which the temple is located, had tried to take control of the building.

This led to a clash with Hindu devotees that escalated into rioting. The developer denied hiring thugs.

The following day, tens of thousands of supporters gathered near the temple in a show of support, but a second round of rioting broke out.

Adib was part of a Fire and Rescue Department team that tried to put out the flames of torched vehicles that had been set ablaze by rioters.

According to authorities, Adib suffered broken ribs and multiple organ injuries after being attacked by rioters. He died on Dec 17.
