CAMERON POLLS | Economic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali vowed to help Felda settlers in Cameron Highlands regardless of who they choose to vote for in the by-election on Jan 26.
Azmin said this after visiting the abandoned homes at Felda Sungai Koyan intended for Felda settlers.
"It is not my intention to make promises to Felda settlers to influence their decision in the by-election.
"Whatever decision the Felda settlers make in the by-election, the government will still serve Felda.
"Even though it (Felda) is saddled with an RM8 billion debt, we will still look at their problems on housing, aid and education," he told Felda settlers in Jelai, Cameron Highlands today.
Jelai is one of the state seats in the parliamentary constituency of Cameron Highlands.
Pakatan Harapan's M Manogaran will be facing BN's Ramli Mohd Nor in the by-election. Two other independent candidates are also contesting, namely Wong Seng Kee and Sallehudin Ab Talib, but are not expected to put up a serious challenge.
Speaking to journalists later, Azmin said he will work to resolve the promised homes for Felda settlers there that have been abandoned for two years.
He added that the government will also find ways to resolve Felda's RM8 billion debt.
Furthermore, Azmin said Putrajaya will find ways to reduce the debt of Felda settlers, such as using local fertiliser and reducing the interest rate of loans.
"Imported fertiliser is expensive and they (Felda settlers) have to foot the burden on debts.
"The interest rate may also be burdensome due to the economic situation but it (any review) will be subject to Felda's finances," he said.
