A police team from the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) is at the law firm of Messrs Rahmat Lim & Partners to search for documents linked to 1MDB.

This was confirmed by CCID acting director Deputy Comm Saiful Azly Kamaruddin, who said that the search is ongoing at the law firm located at Mid-Valley City in Kuala Lumpur.

Earlier, The Edge reported that police had obtained a court order to look for documents related to three 1MDB bonds handled by Goldman Sachs.

Rahmat Lim & Partners was the lawyers' firm representing the US investment banking giant during the issuance of the 1MDB bonds in 2012 and 2013 totalling US$6.5 billion, it reported.

"The police team went to the firm at 10am and we are in the midst of getting the documents," Saiful told Malaysiakini.

He refused to divulge details of the documents the police are looking for.

It is learned that the raid was handled by the Financial and Corporate Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) of the department.

The Edge also claimed that police had obtained related documents from another legal firm, Wong & Partners, but this was refuted by Saiful.

"We were looking at only one legal firm (Rahmat & Lim). Not Wong & Partners," he said.

In November, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) indicted fugitive businessperson Low Taek Jho (Jho Low), former Goldman Sachs banker Tim Leissner and another ex-Goldman banker Roger Ng Chong Hwa on multiple criminal charges related to the 1MDB scandal.

Low was charged in absentia with conspiring to launder billions of dollars from 1MDB in violation of the American Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA).

Leissner, who was Goldman's former Southeast Asia chairperson, pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to launder money and conspiracy to violate the FCPA. He will forfeit US$43.7 million.

Ng was charged with conspiring to violate the FCPA by circumventing the internal accounting controls of the major New York-headquartered financial institution which underwrote more than US$6 billion in bonds issued by 1MDB in three separate offerings in 2012 and 2013. He was then the managing director at the financial institution.
