Sultan Nazrin offered to be deputy Agong out of concern for the people
Sultan Nazrin Shah's responsibilities and concerns for the people were once again evident when he offered himself as deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
The re-election of the Perak ruler for the position which he first held on Dec 13, 2016, was made at the 251st Conference of the Rulers at the Istana Negara here today.
The meeting also witnessed the Pahang ruler Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah being elected the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
A member of the Perak Royal Council, Mohd Annuar Zaini said the election of Sultan Nazrin showed that the election process at the meeting was in the spirit of brotherhood and goodwill.
"The rulers have respected the rotation process and it is now the Pahang Sultan’s turn to become the Agong, then the rulers offered the post of deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong to (the sultan of) Johor.
"Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar did not offer himself (for the position) and the Perak ruler was willing to offer himself again and take the responsibility as deputy king and it was not opposed by all the sultans,” he told Bernama today.
Annuar said the process of selection was orderly, proper and civilised, and it also clearly reflected that the Malay rulers were noble and of high character apart from continuing to make the people their priority.
"There was no lobbying, no undermining… there was mutual respect and it was done for the betterment of the people and nation,” he said.
Meanwhile, Perak Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu said the election of Sultan Abdullah and Sultan Nazrin could continue the tradition of the constitutional monarchy system in the country.
In a brief statement, Faizal added: "The state government is hoping that Sultan Abdullah will continue to be blessed with health and guidance in carrying out his duties as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong."

This act increases my admiration and respect for Sultan Nazrin, who is willing to step in to offer his services, regardless of the position. Daulat Tuanku.
It is this kind of idiotic reporting that makes Bernama a laughing stock and shows them up to be a bunch of clowns. Nobody denies that any material on royalty should be written carefully and couched in proper language in accordance with protocol but you needn’t come out with a creation almost suggesting a testimonial to be used should a sultan wish to apply for job. Nor should the article cloyingly reflect the sultan to be just a notch below or even above sainthood. Mohd Annuar from the Perak Royal Council said that the royal election process “clearly reflected that the Malay rulers were noble and of high character apart from continuing to make the people their priority". No problem. Then it is further stated that “Sultan Nazrin Shah's responsibilities and concerns for the people were once again evident when he offered himself as deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong.” Fair enough again. But what does that paint of the Sultan of Kelantan who stepped down from his office of Agong or the Sultan of Johore who declined the offer?
Johor will never play understudy, stand-by or back-up to anybody. That attitude is not personal to this Sultan. It is Johor, its sense of its own special and historic primacy. So KUDOS to Sultan Nazrin of Perak for his public-spirited readiness to put public service, the national interest and a high regard for constitutional purpose ahead of any personal or local pride.
