On eve of polling, project signboards appear at Orang Asli villages

The signboards bore with the words "Harapan Baru Malaysia." The word "Harapan" bore similarities to Pakatan Harapan's logo.
It also included the federal government crest and ended with the words "Jasa kepada Orang Asli (duty to the Orang Asli)."
When Malaysiakini inspected the signboards, it was noticed that the cement used to hold the poles was still wet.
Residents in Kampung Sungai Tiang and Sungai Chohong told Malaysiakini that the signboards were erected this afternoon by several unknown individuals.
"We don't know who they were. They said they were coming to repair houses next week," said one resident.
According to the signboard at Kampung Sungai Kabuk, the project was supposed to involve repairs to a kindergarten.
Minister says it is wrong
When contacted, Jakoa director-general Ajis Sitin confirmed that his department had erected the signboards.
"We help the Orang Asli all the time," he said curtly.
He hung up when Malaysiakini asked him why the project was announced during the campaign period for the Cameron Highlands by-election.

The Bertam Valley is among the bigger voting districts in Cameron Highlands. Approximately 13.4 percent of the electorate in this district are Orang Asli.
In an immediate reaction, Finance Minister and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said it was wrong for the contractor to erect the signboards.
"After being alerted, we instructed the authorities to take them down immediately," he said.
He added that Harapan was not aware of the signboards and thanked "eagle-eyed" Malaysiakini for spotting them and highlighting the matter.
