Gov't rebrands SL1M to empower youth with entrepreneurship skills

The "Professional Training and Education for Growing Entrepreneurs" (Protégé) programme is therefore slightly different than its precursor SL1M which emphasised on securing job opportunities for youths by enhancing their skills.

In officiating Protégé, Entrepreneur Development Minister Redzuan Yusof explained that youths needed such entrepreneur skills as companies were now hiring fewer workers in the current era of artificial intelligence amidst the fourth industrial revolution.
"As of December 2018, the SL1M programme had trained a total 226,251 people and 70 percent of the participants were offered a job while the balance 30 percent were not given jobs," he said.
This 30 percent group of participants will be provided with entrepreneur skills, he said.
“Hiring trends are getting worse as (you will) find people losing their jobs and not many companies like TNB will absorb fresh graduates probably due to financial constraints," he said.
"As such, we have to change the mindset of the youth so they are more courageous and creative (by taking up entrepreneurship)," he said.
Under the Protégé initiative, he said the ministry will explore entrepreneur potential so that the youth will be less dependent on the job market.
Beside exploring opportunities with government-linked companies (GLCs) and the private sector, he said the ministry would set its sights on opportunities abroad.
Currently, he said the ministry was cooperating with companies in China and Japan to place youth participants there to learn entrepreneurship skills.
Redzuan, who is also Bersatu supreme council member, said he wanted the country to achieve a 100 percent employment rate for fresh graduates in the country.
When this Minister talked of "Youths" what does he mean. In our country, politicians are very good in saying things that are not precise and meaningful. Their speeches are very ambiguous and their references seem to be universal but in fact they are misleading. Can the Minister give us social statistics to refer to his speech. If after University training and they become unemployable i. e. the majority, then something must be wrong with the planning in higher education and its function and quality. Now we hear there are many doctors who cannot be interned. Of course this is the case because there are all kinds of Colleges offering Medicine Degrees today. Like Air Asia where every one can fly , now we see every one can be a Doctor too. Entry qualifications have been ridiculously lowered. Just like every one can go to University too. We are not against this entry opportunity but we have to maintain certain standards, especially for some elite and quality Universities. Similarly in the US there are recognised Ivy Leaque Universities against so called "Mickey Mouse" Universities. Over here , our one time MU which was world recognised has now dropped to lower levels. Similar to USM, UKM, UTM,, how and why? No point trying to create this and that institutions to solve the problems of unemployment when what ever existing is dropping into the sewers. Check your quality and the people who are running the Universities ,Colleges and schools as well. There must be reasons for standards to drop like durians. Face the issues honestly and rationally.

There is a high demand for daily needs at a reasonable cost. This sector is dominated by foreign labourers especially in the area B40 residences are concentrated. Currently, GLCs and other government-sponsored bodies are treating young entrepreneurs as Jaga Pintu Budak to enrich the cronies. Harapan must work with civil societies to identify the talent to deploy the youngsters appropriately.
