Pakatan Harapan will set up a new unit to handle disinformation hurled by the opposition and to share the federal government's new achievements.

"We found that the people are not aware of what has been done by the government and we do not have a joint (mechanism) to explain," Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said after chairing a Harapan presidential council meeting at Putrajaya today.

"That's why we are having an entity to check on the accusations hurled at Harapan as well as (to inform) the public on what we have done since we took power.

"Although many felt that the Harapan coalition would not succeed, the fact is we are able to work together after taking over (Putrajaya) and we are able to cooperate when (formulating) policies on economic, political and social aspects.

"It is barely noticeable, but lots have been achieved and we will list them out," said Mahathir, who is the adviser to Harapan.

He also announced the appointment of Home Minister and Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin as the chairperson of the Pakatan Harapan Election Committee. Muhyiddin (photo) had played the same role when he was the Umno deputy president.

Mahathir added that Harapan would also set up a body akin to the National Economic Action Council (NEAC) to scrutinise and decide on economic issues.

"But it will have a different name.

"This is to expedite decision-making and (follow-up) action processes because we are all over the place without a unified body (to deal with the economic issues)," he said.

The NEAC was established in January 1998 to advise the cabinet following the Asian Financial Crisis back then.
