Mat Hasan: Understand each other's cultures to erase suspicions
Forging a closer understanding between the different cultures is the best way to maintain harmony and prosperity among Malaysia's multi-ethnic, multi-religious landscape, according to acting Umno president Mohamad Hasan.
Unlike in the past, Mohamad said there now appears to be more doubts and suspicions raised among the different ethnic groups, a situation he attributed to a lack of understanding of each other's cultures.
"Malaysians must realise that we have lived together for a long time and we need to strengthen our ties by exposing our young to each other's cultures to avoid any suspicions.
"When they don't know about other cultures, then this might fuel suspicions towards others," Mohamad told reporters after attending MCA's annual Chinese New Year open house at its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur this morning.
In urging all Malaysians to join the Chinese community in celebrating their new year today, Mohamad said he was personally familiar with Chinese traditions having grown up in a Chinese new village.
"I understand (the culture) and I don't feel awkward.
"But because lately, our (society's) system has grown more segregated, starting from separate schools, the feeling of doubts and suspicions are very high," he noted.
"Our diversity is our strength. Don't make it a weakness.
"We need to understand this. So today I would like to advise the Malays, Indians and others to join our friends from the Tiong Hua community in celebrating the Chinese New Year today.
“And let's all pray for our country to remain peaceful and prosperous," he added.
As host, MCA president Wee Ka Siong said the annual function showcased the unity among BN component parties and was a representation of the long-lasting unity among nation's various races.
Also present today were MIC president SA Vigneswaran and Gerakan president Dominic Lau.
In Cameron he joined Taliban Hadi and other racist like Lokman to warn and lie to the Malays that they are losing power to the non Malays. He also said to the Malays that Fireman Adib was killed by the Indians. Now like his former fork tongued boss Najib he talks about diversity,Today he is drunk?
May the Year of the Pig bring greater prosperity and good sense to all Malaysians including the pig-headed ones who stubbornly refuse to acknowledge the innate goodness and abundance of a multi-cultural nation. I trust Acting UMNO President Mahamad Hassan was not repelled by the 12th of the Zodiac animals and the wealth it signifies. He, like God, knows the country needs that now more than ever. How else can one win buy-elections in Malaysia?
Picture of a dog - cannot. Picture of a pig - cannot. Picture of a cross - cannot. Understand each other's culture my foot.
