Kelantan Umno wants the informal cooperation between Umno and PAS to be formalised.
Its chairperson Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub said a more formal structure would immediately improve the cooperation between the two parties at all levels.
“Kelantan Umno doesn’t just support the ongoing process of working together, but wants stronger ties,” the Machang MP told reporters at a press conference after having dinner with the media at Kota Bharu last night.
Jazlan said a strong coalition between the two parties would bear fruit in them winning more seats in future elections.
Citing the recent Cameron Highlands by-election as an example, he said the cooperation between the two parties should not be on an ad hoc and temporary basis.
Umno and PAS also teamed up successfully in the anti-Icerd campaign which culminated in a triumphant rally in December 2018.
Kelantan Umno had sent a memorandum to party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi last year, calling for the cooperation to be formalised and registered, Jazlan said.
He said Zahid was receptive to the proposal, but said a number of processes and procedures needed to be discussed.
Jazlan added that the state Umno was engaging Kelantan PAS on both personal and official levels.
The two parties have been bitter rivals through most of their history, save for a period from 1973 to 1978 when PAS was part of the Umno-led BN coalition.
