DAP man cites Anwar to defend Dr M over influx of ex-Umno MPs

Amid criticisms against Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad for accepting former Umno lawmakers into Bersatu, a DAP man pointed out that PKR president Anwar Ibrahim had done the same two decades ago.
“Let's go back to 1998 when Anwar was sacked from the government and Umno.
"Many Umno leaders and members who supported Anwar jumped ship to PKR when it was set up in 1999," Batu Kawan DAP secretary David Marshel told Malaysiakini.
Furthermore, he argued that it is common practice for political parties to open their doors to former rivals.
“Throughout history, we have seen all parties whether race-based or multiethnic parties do this.
"Some have given up on their parties but not the struggle. So they find new avenues and platforms to engage with others politically," he added.
What is important, stressed the Seberang Perai municipal councillor, is that those who join Harapan are committed to the coalition's principles and support its struggles.
Marshel said it was not only former Umno members who had jumped ship to PKR but those from MCA and MIC as well.
He said even DAP had accepted former rivals who are now considered assets.
However, Marshel agreed that those who wish to join Harapan parties must be screened and monitored to ensure they did not switch camps to obtain contracts or escape prosecution.
"We hope Mahathir keeps his word that those who jumped ship to Bersatu would not be given posts until GE15. He is an experienced politician and will make the right decision," he added,
The admission of former Umno lawmakers had drawn criticism from various quarters, including those within Harapan.
One of those who joined Bersatu was Tasek Gelugor MP Shabudin Yahaya, whom DAP secretary-general and former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng had described as a monster for suggesting that victims be allowed to marry their rapists.
Lim, who is now finance minister, said he still condemns the former Umno man for his remarks.
