Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the next Johor menteri besar will be from Bersatu in line with the Pakatan Harapan agreement.
The prime minister revealed that three to four candidates are under consideration for the post.
“We already have three to four names.
“We will have to discuss the replacement but in line with the Harapan agreement, the Johor menteri besar will have to be from Bersatu,” he told reporters in Parliament this evening.
Earlier, Mahathir confirmed that Osman Sapian had tendered his resignation as menteri besar.
He said Osman had submitted his letter to him when the pair met in Putrajaya yesterday.
However, the premier declined to explain why Osman decided to tender his resignation.
He said an acting menteri besar may be appointed in the interim.
On Monday, Osman met with Mahathir in Putrajaya amid talk that the menteri besar's head was on the chopping block.
However, the menteri besar's aide had downplayed speculation, stating that the meeting with the premier was to discuss the 9th Malaysia-Singapore Leaders' Retreat.
However, Osman's absence at the retreat today set tongues wagging that his days as menteri besar were numbered.
Instead of the menteri besar, Johor executive councillor in charge of health and environment Sahruddin Jamal attended the retreat. The latter has been touted as a possible successor to Osman.
