A meeting among a majority of Johor Bersatu chiefs yesterday concluded with a consensus that they want Johor Menteri Besar Dr Sahruddin Jamal to be appointed as the party state chief.
A division chief who attended the meeting confirmed that the gathering took place in Johor Bahru yesterday.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, he also confirmed that the meeting was called by former Johor menteri besar Osman Sapian.
The meeting had led to speculation that Osman was seeking to make a comeback as Johor Bersatu chief, a post he lost after resigning as Johor menteri besar following a fall out with the central leadership.
This was despite Puteri Wangsa assemblyperson Mazlan Bujang having received his appointment letter as the new Johor Bersatu chief.
However, the division chief said the final consensus was that they wanted Sahruddin.
"This is to keep with the status quo where the Johor menteri besar is also the Johor Bersatu chief," he said.
He added that 22 out of the 26 division chiefs attended the meeting. Another division chief was also invited, but he could not make it.
Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported on speculation of a split between Osman and Mazlan following the meeting.
The choice of Sahruddin could be a compromise, but it will require the central leadership to change its decision on the appointment of Mazlan.
