Dr Mahathir Mohamad has confirmed that a new chief executive officer has been appointed to Telekom Malaysia.
However, the prime minister refused to name him, only stating that it was not acting CEO Imri Mokhtar.
“I don't think they (TM) have announced (the new CEO) yet but I think he has been appointed,” he told reporters during a press conference at his Hari Raya Open House at his official residence in Putrajaya.
“(It is) someone else,” he added when questioned if it was Imri.
When pressed further on the identity of the new appointee, Mahathir (photo) merely smiled but remained tight-lipped.
It was recently reported that TM chairperson Rosli Man was in a standoff with special shareholder, the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOF Inc), and was refusing to appoint Imri as the company's CEO.
Imri is presently carrying out the duties of CEO in an acting capacity.
He was made acting CEO last November, replacing Bazlan Osman who also resigned.
The telco has been without a permanent CEO for a year following Shazalli Ramly’s resignation last June. He was the media advisor to former premier Najib Abdul Razak.
Rosli, meanwhile, became chairperson last December after the resignation of Sulaiman Mahbob.
Telekom Malaysia, in an announcement to Bursa Malaysia, however, said Imri was indeed recommended by the board and had been endorsed by MOF Inc, subject to procedures, but it was the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) that had asked for a deferment.
On Saturday, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said the appointment of TM chairperson and CEO could only be made after a directive is issued by Mahathir.
