Measles blamed for Bateq death, and 9 other things that happened yesterday

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

1. The death of a Bateq toddler from Kampung Kuala Koh, who died yesterday, is confirmed to be due to measles, and 37 of 112 members of the community reportedly suffering respiratory tract infections also have the disease.

2. Dr Steven Chow, who visited Kampung Kuala Koh for outreach medical work, said a measles outbreak is a plausible explanation for the 15 deaths so far, but said it is unfair to link this to their nomadic lifestyles as they are receptive to medical care and vaccines.

3. A group of Australian experts reportedly said the sex video implicating Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali did not appear to be altered, but they could not identify whether Azmin is one of the two men in the video.

4. Amid the sex scandal, Azmin tweeted about being granted an audience with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah and his pledge to adhere to the King’s advice, but he did not divulge what was discussed.

5. A report claimed that TRX City Sdn Bhd’s company secretary is Jho Low’s aunt, but Jho Low and Goh Gaik Kim denied that she is Jho Low’s aunt.

6. The Malaysian Medical Association has launched a campaign to rally public support and gather recommendations to overhaul the national healthcare system.

7. The Canadian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur clarified that the country is still working closely with Malaysia to deal with shipments of waste from Canada to Malaysia, and said earlier statements that appear to suggest otherwise had been taken out-of-context.

8. The Petrol Dealers' Association Malaysia said the industry is still in the dark about a new targeted fuel subsidy system, even though it is set for implementation in two weeks, and is nervous that angry motorists would lash out against the dealers.

9. De facto Law Minister Liew Vui Keong said the government is still waiting for the outcome of a court case before tabling a bill to abolish the mandatory death penalty for drug-related offences. However, a similar bill for murder cases may be ready in time for the Dewan Rakyat’s July sitting.

10. The Penang government is planning to seek an allocation from the federal government for the Penang Transport Master Plan, especially for its light rail transit system.
