"Maybe it's a little bit too late as we (Umno) have agreed to work together with PAS," he told media at the Parliament lobby.
The former minister said there was no turning back from the alliance between both parties, as they had won three by-elections since last May, and aimed to win the next general election.
He also questioned the rationale behind Mahathir’s invitation, saying that a combination of Bersatu, Umno and PAS would not enable Harapan to obtain the 112 parliamentarians needed to form the federal government.
"(As such,) I would love for Mahathir to come back to Umno. Come back to Umno, because all splinter parties will not survive, as shown in history," said the Padang Rengas MP.
He pledged that he would personally ensure that the cooperation between Umno and PAS would not be affected.
Last Friday, Mahathir had invited all Malay parties, including Umno, to join Bersatu in an effort to unite the Malays.
He said more and more Malay parties were being formed, which reduced the odds of a Malay party winning an election.
Both Umno and PAS had turned down the premier's request.
Mahathir then clarified he only intended to invite the Malay party members to join his party.
