Amid a rift between PKR's top two leaders, six state party chiefs have inked a pledge to support their president, Anwar Ibrahim.
During a press conference at the party headquarters in Petaling Jaya this morning, the six also announced the formation of a state chiefs council.
According to them, more state chiefs would be inking the pledge.
However, they denied this was in response to 26 PKR leaders, including 14 MPs and eight assemblypersons, signing a memorandum in support of Azmin and urging Anwar to cease making divisive statements.
The six state chiefs who support Anwar are Johari Abdul (Kedah), Amran Kamarudin (Perlis), Halim Bachik (Malacca), Azan Ismail (Terengganu), Zahir Hassan (Federal Territories) and Mohamad Supardi Md Noor (Kelantan).
Johari, the coordinator of the state chiefs council, also read a written statement during the press conference.
“First, we fully support the party president. We also support the president's efforts to develop PKR into a strong and respectable political party.
"We stand firm behind him in facing any challenges in the event there are those attempting to undermine PKR. We pledge our undivided commitment to him to lead the country to meet the rakyat's expectations.
"We are confident that Anwar is a leader who will fulfil all the promises that the party made during the last election, and we will be with him to ensure that all these are carried out," he said.
The six state leaders who formed the council include those who were handpicked by Anwar last year to lead PKR's state chapters.
They were appointed to their positions following discussions between Anwar and state division leaders in accordance with the party's constitution.
When pressed further by the press whether their action has anything to do with the ongoing internal tussle given the timing of their declaration, Johari said they were not interested in the current internal party conflict.
"We are only interested in developing our states," he said.
Many other state chiefs might be joining
On the absence of the eight other state PKR chiefs from today's meeting, the group claimed that many could not make it as they were still on the way from their respective states.
Johari said many had also stated their intention of joining and pledging their support for Anwar, but he did not mention any names.
The group will be meeting with the other state chiefs later today during the PKR retreat in Port Dickson to get their signatures.
He said among those whom they contacted to join them was Selangor PKR chief and Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari.
However, this was contrary to what an aide to Amirudin told Malaysiakini, that the Azmin's successor did not know about the event nor had he received any invitation.
