Kelantan Amanah Youth said today that the party should set up a special unit to target youth voters ahead of the 15th general election.
Its chief Hazmi Hassan said this was as the lowering of the voting age to 18 from 21 will pose a new challenge for the party.
"An urgent move must be made to attract support from the youngest group (of voters).
"Election preparations in the future must place special focus on strategies to attract their support," said Hazmi, who lauded the government's success in pushing for the constitutional amendment to lower the voting age.
"Therefore, I suggest that we create a special unit to manage the affairs of youth voters.
"Political awareness advocacy must be in initiated by Amanah Youth," he said in a press statement in conjunction with the Amanah Youth Convention 2019 in Kota Bharu yesterday.
At the convention, Hazmi managed to retain his post as Kelantan Amanah Youth chief uncontested.
When contacted, he told Malaysiakini that Amanah must make early preparations to not just explain the government's policies to youths, but also how significant their votes will be.
"That is why we need a special unit to manage youth voters, aside from compiling data on them.
"Based on the compiled data, it will make it easier for the party to reach our target groups and deliver the relevant information," he said, adding that it is part of an overall process to help young people become informed voters.
