Why didn't Zahid blame his boss for stealing and losing GE14, asks Dr M

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has asked Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to look into the reasons for BN's defeat in the last general election instead of accusing Attorney-General Tommy Thomas of subverting the course of justice.

“His boss (former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak) stole money (in the past) but he (Zahid) did not blame him at all.

“Only now he wants to lay blame.

“When he goes home he should ask himself why he lost (in GE14). You lost because you did not blame your boss,” Mahathir told reporters after being conferred with an honorary doctorate from the National Arts, Culture and Heritage Academy (Aswara) in Kuala Lumpur today.

Najib is currently on trial over a slew of charges related to SRC International Sdn Bhd and the 1MDB scandal.

Mahathir was asked to comment on Zahid's remarks during a ceramah in Tanjung Piai, Johor, last night that the law has not been applied in a just manner since Thomas' appointment. 

The Umno president, who is also facing court charges, had questioned the acquittal of a woman over a 2017 reckless driving case which caused the death of eight teenage cyclists. 

“When eight children riding their bicycles in Johor were hit by a woman (driver), that woman was released as though there was no evidence.

"Those children have died, they have become arwah (the deceased)," Zahid told the crowd.

The second case Zahid brought up was the release of four suspects detained in connection with the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim. 

He alleged that the suspects were released because they had "human rights lawyers" and Thomas was the AG.

Police previously said the suspects detained last December were released as there was no clear indication they were linked to Adib's death.

Earlier today, DAP lawmaker Ramkarpal Singh said Zahid should be cited for contempt of court for his remarks. 

Meanwhile at a press conference in Tanjung Piai, Home Affairs Minister Muhyiddin Yassin expressed surprise that Zahid seemingly did not understand how the law worked.

"I am baffled and shocked that Zahid does not understand the country's (legal) system, (he) who is the former deputy prime minister, my good friend does not respect the court's decision.

"Don't play with sentiments, 'Oh because these people are upset, you want to follow them to be upset'," Muhyiddin said.

He said if anyone was unhappy with the court's ruling, they could challenge it in court.
