Don't offend other religions or races during speeches - Umno VP

UMNO AGM | INTERVIEW | Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob has advised speakers at the party's annual general assembly to avoid offending non-Muslims or non-Malays.

He said speakers should debate on policies with facts and not emotion.

"We don't want delegates who are too emotional about racial issues to the point they offend other ethnic groups or touch on religious sensitivities.

"Even in Umno, for instance, we have a division head from Sabah who is a Christian priest," said Ismail in an interview with Malaysiakini.

As for criticisms against party leaders, which were generally rare in past Umno AGMs, Ismail said delegates were free to express themselves as long as they maintained decorum.

"If you need to criticise the leaders, go ahead. However, do not resort to personal attacks. Don't criticise other races (as well)," he said.

Ismail said that the atmosphere at the Umno AGM this year was a lot different than last year, in that Umno now has more public support because it was successful in four by-elections.

The last Umno AGM was a sombre affair as it was held just four months after the BN coalition was removed from Putrajaya.

Ismail said although Umno was now the federal opposition, it must continue to be the voice of Malaysians, especially the Malays.

"We must continue to voice up regarding the welfare of the Malays... We are being heard by the government," he said.
