Maszlee to contest Simpang Renggam division chief post

Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik has thrown his hat in the ring for the post of Simpang Renggam Bersatu division chief in the coming party elections.

Maszlee was spotted submitting his nomination form this morning, but declined to comment on the matter when asked by reporters.

Also seen submitting his form for the same post was pro-tem division chief Ahmad Ahem, 62.

Ahmad, who has been in politics since his 20s, said although he may have to face the former Education Minister, he was confident that party members at grassroots level knew who could deliver the best service.

“I hope the members will choose a candidate who is truly capable and not merely on the capacity of positions,” he said when met after submitting his nomination form at the Simpang Renggam Bersatu division office in Kluang today.

Ahmad said the division election would involve 997 members from 10 branches.

"It is also hoped that every member will elect the best candidate for the future and the good of the party," he said.

Meanwhile, Bersatu women's wing chief Rina Mohd Harun (photo) has confirmed that she will be contesting for a post in the Sepang division in the coming party election.

However, Rina who is also rural development minister declined to disclose which position.

"I will submit the form this evening," she told reporters after attending a meet-the-successful entrepreneurs session organised by RichWorks International Sdn Bhd in Shah Alam today.

Asked why she decided to contest in the Sepang division, Rina said she and her family are originally from the district.

"In fact, I was the Sepang Puteri Umno chief before," she said.

Rina was reported to have said recently that she wound defend her post in the next party election as there were still several agendas for women that she wanted to work on.

The Bersatu branch meetings are scheduled to be held from Feb 15 to March 29, followed by the divisional meetings on April 18 and the general assembly from June 25 to 28.

Bersatu will hold its election for committees at the branch, division and supreme leadership council-level, including women and youth wings.
