Motorcycle gift for teens should include helmet - Perlis RTD

Parents who want to give their secondary school-going children a motorcycle as a gift should include a driving licence and crash helmet in the package, said Perlis Road Transport Department (RTD) director Fatimah Mohamed Ali Piah.

Fatimah (above) said parents play an important role in raising their children's awareness on becoming courteous and responsible road users.

“We know many parents today give motorcycles to their children to encourage them to study hard and get good results in their examination, but in doing so, parents should not forget the need to tell their children to be courteous road users," she told Bernama recently.

She said it would be better for parents to include the B2 driving licence and a crash helmet with the motorcycle for their children’s safety when riding the machine to school.

She said the department held regular talks on road safety in schools, especially in secondary schools, and advised students to get a driving licence before they ride motorcycles on their own.

“Parents play an important role in raising their children’s awareness on the need to get a licence before they can be allowed to ride a motorcycle, as they (parents) could also be issued a summon if their children are caught breaking the rules,” she added.

Meanwhile, Perlis police chief Surina Saad said the state police, through its Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, continuously organised advocacy programmes for schoolchildren, teachers and parents, on road safety.
